Remote Pilot Qualification

GVC

General VLOS Certificate

A legacy Specific Category Remote Pilot qualification covering Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations only.

Overview

The General VLOS Certificate, known as GVC, is a Specific Category Remote Pilot qualification for Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations. It is issued in Multirotor and Fixed Wing categories.

The GVC is used where the Operational Authorisation states that a GVC is acceptable evidence of Remote Pilot competence. The privileges of a GVC holder are limited to acting as Remote Pilot in command or flight crew of an unmanned aircraft in the Specific Category, conducted VLOS, under an Operational Authorisation that states GVC is the minimum Remote Pilot competence.

BVLOS flight is prohibited under the GVC. Remote Pilots who require Beyond Visual Line of Sight with Visual Mitigations (BVLOS VM) or full BVLOS privileges must use the Remote Pilot Certificate framework.

Training and assessment structure

GVC training and assessment is completed through a CAA-approved RAE(PC). The course includes theoretical training, theory assessment, Operations Manual creation and review, and a practical flight assessment.

Element Notes
1. Theory training Covers air law and responsibilities, UAS airspace operating principles, human performance limitations, meteorology, navigation and charts, airmanship and aviation safety, UAS general knowledge, operator responsibilities and operating procedures.
2. Theory assessment Assesses the GVC theoretical syllabus for Specific Category VLOS operations. The pass mark is at least 75% in all theoretical knowledge assessments.
3. Operations manual The Remote Pilot must have an operations manual that can be provided for the practical flight assessment. The Operations Manual must be reviewed by the RAE(PC) and include the required content.
4. Practical flight assessment Covers pre-flight planning, documentation, aircraft inspection, site assessment, operating area checks, normal procedures, abnormal and emergency procedures, aircraft control, checklist use, post-flight inspection and recording.
5. Certificate issue Issued after the Remote Pilot has completed the applicable GVC theory training, theory assessment, Operations Manual creation and review, and practical flight assessment.

Privileges and limits

VLOS only

Covers VLOS operations in the Specific Category where the Operational Authorisation states that GVC is the minimum Remote Pilot competence. BVLOS flight is prohibited.

Aircraft category options

Multirotor

Where the unmanned aircraft is primarily lifted by rotating wing(s), such as multirotor or helicopter-type aircraft.

Fixed Wing

Where the unmanned aircraft is primarily lifted by fixed wing(s), such as airplane-type aircraft.

Validity, currency and renewal

Validity period

5 years

Valid for 5 years from the date notified on the certificate. On renewal, the renewed GVC expiry date is 5 years from the date the current certificate expires.

Currency requirement

2 hours in 90 days (PDRA01 only)

The GVC has no standalone certificate currency requirement. The 2-hour currency requirement applies to fly under a PDRA01 Operational Authorisation.

Renewal process

Renewal course

Renewal is completed through an RAE(PC). The Remote Pilot must pass the latest theory assessment with a 75% minimum pass mark, unless completing a full theory course and assessment.

Revalidation and renewal rules

Item Requirement
Renewal window Renewal exams must not be conducted earlier than 6 months before the certificate expiry date.
Renewal method Completed at a RAE(PC); it does not have to be renewed through the RAE(PC) that originally issued it.
Renewal theory course and assessment All Remote Pilots renewing a GVC must retake a full theoretical course and pass an assessment unless they pass the latest theoretical knowledge assessment with a minimum pass mark of 75%. The Remote Pilot has one attempt at the latest theoretical assessment. If that attempt is failed, the Remote Pilot must complete a full theoretical course and assessment using a different final assessment paper.
Practical assessment All Remote Pilots renewing a GVC must retake the practical flight assessment unless they demonstrate a minimum of 2 hours of verifiable currency in the 3 months preceding the renewal application.
Renewal after expiry If the GVC has expired, a full course must be conducted unless the course was booked while the GVC was still valid. Once expired, the Remote Pilot must not operate in the Specific Category until the GVC is renewed.

Where it fits

The GVC is a legacy Specific Category VLOS qualification which is being phased out, and sits alongside the newer RPC framework. New GVC issue stops on 31/12/2027; after that date, remote pilot training and assessment moves to the RPC framework. The GVC is not an RPC level and is not a direct progression route into RPC-L1, L2 or L3. A valid UK CAA Flyer ID is required before starting GVC training.
