Remote Pilot Qualification

A2 CofC

A2 Certificate of Competency

An Open Category Remote Pilot qualification for Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations in the Near People (A2) subcategory.

Overview

The A2 Certificate of Competency, known as A2 CofC, is an Open Category Remote Pilot qualification for Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations in the Near People (A2) subcategory.

The A2 CofC is used where the Remote Pilot wants to operate an eligible unmanned aircraft in the Open Category closer to uninvolved people than the Far from People (A3) subcategory allows. The A2 subcategory requires the Remote Pilot to hold an A2 CofC and to meet the applicable aircraft and separation rules.

The A2 CofC is only for the Open Category. If your operation cannot remain within the Open Category rules, it moves into the Specific Category. In that case, the UAS Operator must hold the correct CAA Operational Authorisation, and the Remote Pilot must hold the qualification stated in that authorisation (such as a Remote Pilot Certificate).

Training and assessment structure

A2 CofC training and assessment is completed through a CAA-approved RAE(PC). The route includes theory training, self-directed practical training, a declaration of self-practical training, and a theory assessment.

Element Notes
1. Theory training Covers meteorology, UAS flight performance, and technical and operational mitigations for ground risk.
2. Self-practical training Completed by the Remote Pilot in the operating conditions of either the Over People (A1) subcategory or Far from People (A3) subcategory.
3. Self-declaration Submitted to the RAE(PC) by the Remote Pilot after completing the self-practical training.
4. Theory assessment At least 30 multiple-choice questions. The pass mark is at least 75% overall.
5. Certificate issue Issued after the Remote Pilot has completed the theory training, completed and declared the self-practical training, and passed the theory assessment.

Privileges and limits

VLOS only

Covers VLOS operations in the Open Category Near People (A2) subcategory. BVLOS flight is prohibited.

Aircraft category options

Not category-issued

The A2 CofC is not issued by aircraft category. One certificate covers both multirotor/rotorcraft and fixed wing drones, provided the aircraft and operation meet the A2 rules.

Validity, currency and renewal

Validity period

5 years

Valid for 5 years from the date notified on the certificate. On renewal, the renewed A2 CofC expiry date is 5 years from the date the current certificate expires.

Currency requirement

None

The A2 CofC has no currency requirement to exercise the privileges.

Renewal process

Renewal course

Renewal is completed through an RAE(PC). The Remote Pilot must pass the latest A2 theoretical knowledge assessment with a 75% minimum pass mark, unless completing a full theory course and assessment.

Revalidation and renewal rules

Item Requirement
Renewal window Renewal exams must not be conducted earlier than 6 months before the certificate expiry date.
Renewal method Completed at a RAE(PC); it does not have to be renewed through the RAE(PC) that originally issued it.
Renewal theory course and assessment All Remote Pilots renewing an A2 CofC must retake a full theoretical course and assessment unless they pass the latest theoretical knowledge assessment with a minimum pass mark of 75%. The Remote Pilot has one attempt at the latest theoretical assessment. If that attempt is failed, the Remote Pilot must complete a full theoretical course and assessment using a different final assessment paper.
Self-practical training evidence The Remote Pilot must make a declaration of competence and provide proof of identity, the current A2 CofC certificate, a valid Flyer ID, and flight logs demonstrating the self-practical training building blocks completed within the previous 3 months.
Renewal after expiry If the A2 CofC has expired, a full course must be conducted unless the course was booked while the A2 CofC was still valid. Once expired, the Remote Pilot must not operate in the Near People (A2) subcategory until the A2 CofC is renewed.

Where it fits

The A2 CofC sits within the Open Category and is used for Near People (A2) operations. It is not a Specific Category qualification, not an Operational Authorisation, and not a prerequisite for GVC, RPC-L1, RPC-L2 or RPC-L3. A valid UK CAA Flyer ID is required before starting A2 CofC training.
