CAA Registration

DMARES

Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Service

DMARES is the CAA registration service for UK drones and model aircraft. It issues the Flyer ID for the person flying and the Operator ID for the person or organisation responsible for the aircraft.

Overview

The Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Service, known as DMARES, is the CAA system used to issue Flyer IDs and Operator IDs for UK drone and model aircraft use.

A Flyer ID is for the person flying the drone or model aircraft. It is obtained by passing the CAA online theory test and is required for most outdoor flying in the UK.

An Operator ID is for the person or organisation responsible for the drone or model aircraft. The Operator ID must be displayed on the aircraft when one is required.

A Flyer ID and Operator ID do not authorise every type of flight. The operation must still meet the Open Category rules, or move into the Specific Category with the correct CAA Operational Authorisation where the Open Category rules cannot be met.

Training and assessment structure

DMARES registration is completed through the CAA registration service. The Flyer ID route registers the person flying after they pass the CAA online theory test. The Operator ID route registers the person or organisation responsible for the aircraft and creates the ID that must be displayed on the aircraft.

Element Notes
1. Get a Flyer ID Create or sign in to a CAA registration account, complete the CAA online theory test and pass it. The Flyer ID is issued to the person flying and is valid for 5 years.
2. Get an Operator ID Register the person or organisation responsible for the drone or model aircraft, confirm the operator details and pay the CAA Operator ID fee. An individual registering for an Operator ID must be at least 18 years old.
3. When both IDs are needed From 250 g to less than 25 kg, both a Flyer ID and Operator ID are required. From 100 g to less than 250 g, a Flyer ID is required, and an Operator ID is also required where the aircraft has a camera.
4. Display the Operator ID Where an Operator ID is required, it must be displayed on the drone or model aircraft. The Flyer ID is not displayed on the aircraft.
5. Keep each registration valid The Flyer ID is free and valid for 5 years. The Operator ID is paid and valid for 1 year. The Flyer ID is renewed by passing the CAA online theory test again; the Operator ID is renewed annually through the CAA registration service.

Structure and privileges

Flyer ID

Shows that the person flying has passed the CAA online theory test. It is held by the Remote Pilot and is not displayed on the aircraft.

Operator ID

Identifies the person or organisation responsible for the aircraft. The same Operator ID can be used for all drones and model aircraft controlled by that operator.

Aircraft category options

Not category-issued

Not issued by aircraft category. Both IDs cover any drone or model aircraft. One Operator ID can be used across all of an operator’s aircraft.

Validity, currency and renewal

Flyer ID validity

5 years

A Flyer ID is free and valid for 5 years. The CAA online theory test must be passed again to renew it.

Operator ID validity

1 year

An Operator ID costs £12.34 and is valid for 1 year. It must be renewed annually while the operator remains responsible for aircraft requiring an Operator ID.

Currency requirement

No flight currency rule

Flyer ID and Operator ID registrations do not create a live-flight currency requirement. Currency requirements come from the applicable qualification, Operational Authorisation or operating procedure.

Revalidation and renewal rules

Item Requirement
Flyer ID renewal Renewed every 5 years by passing the CAA online theory test again.
Operator ID renewal Renewed every year through the CAA registration service. The current individual Operator ID fee is £12.34.
Minimum age There is no age limit for a Flyer ID. An individual must be at least 18 years old to get an Operator ID.
Children Children can hold a Flyer ID. Children under 13 must be with a parent or guardian when taking the test and registering. A parent or guardian must register for an Operator ID where the child owns an aircraft requiring one.

Where it fits

DMARES is the registration layer underneath the UK drone rules. They sit before qualifications such as A2 CofC, GVC and RPCs. A Flyer ID proves that the Remote Pilot has passed the CAA online theory test. An Operator ID identifies the person or organisation responsible for the aircraft.
