Drone Compliance Calculator

Use the interactive calculator to check which IDs, qualifications and permissions you need for your planned drone flight. Instantly see the correct category, CAA requirements, insurance, and more—customised to your operation.

Operation Details

Choose the UK class mark stamped on your aircraft. If your drone has no UK/EU class mark, select Legacy / No class mark to enter the Maximum Take-Off Mass (MTOM) manually.

Use the manufacturer-stated MTOM. If MTOM is unavailable, enter the ready-to-fly weight including batteries and payloads.

  • < 100 g → IDs optional but strongly recommended.
  • 100–249 g without a cameraFlyer ID required, Operator ID optional.
  • 100–249 g with a cameraFlyer ID and Operator ID required.
  • ≥ 250 g → both Flyer ID and Operator ID required.

Your drone or model aircraft is likely to be a toy if:

  • the manufacturer or store you bought it from describes it as a toy
  • you bought it from a toy department or retailer
  • it is marked as suitable for below age 14 or a younger age group
  • it was advertised or packaged to attract children

If flying using FPV in the Open Category or under a PDRA-01 OA, you must have an observer stood next to you who maintains VLOS of the drone at all times.

Select this only if you are a current member flying under your model aircraft club or association's Article 16 Operational Authorisation at a listed site or event, and that authorisation explicitly permits FPV without a separate visual observer inside a controlled sterile area.

Note: Since 2020, the CAA has implemented a risk-based framework and no longer distinguishes between recreational and commercial flying for permissions or category rules. Purpose is asked here only to calculate your insurance requirements and it does not change your overall calculator result.

  • Commercial operations: You must always hold third-party liability insurance that meets the requirements of UK Reg (EU) 785/2004.
  • Recreational flights with drones ≤ 500 kg: Insurance is optional but recommended.
  • Any flight with a drone > 500 kg (commercial or recreational): Third-party liability insurance compliant with UK Reg (EU) 785/2004 is mandatory.

Always stay at least 50 m away (unless flying in the Open A1 Category or under a UK SORA OA).

"Assemblies of People" are defined as "gatherings where persons are unable to move away due to the density of those present" such as concerts or festivals. (UK Regulation (EU) 2019/947).

If flying in the Open Category or under a PDRA-01 OA, you must not exceed 120 m (≈400 ft) AGL

Open A3 Category requires you stay ≥ 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas.

  • Low/medium risk Dangerous Goods → likely Specific Category under a UK SORA OA.
  • High-risk Dangerous Goods → likely Certified Category.
